Why Mental Health Wellness for Kenyan Youth

The mental wellness of Kenyan youth is an emerging issue of significant concern. With a rapidly changing social, economic, and political landscape, young people in Kenya face various challenges that impact their mental health. These challenges include unemployment, academic pressure, social media influence, and inadequate mental health services.

Key Challenges Affecting Mental Wellness

(1)    Unemployment and Economic Pressure: High rates of unemployment among Kenyan youth lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression. The lack of job opportunities forces many to rely on informal employment or remain jobless, exacerbating stress and anxiety.

(2)    Academic Pressure: The competitive nature of the Kenyan education system places immense pressure on students. The high stakes associated with national exams such as the KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) can lead to severe stress, anxiety, and even cases of depression among students.

(3)    Social Media Influence: The pervasive use of social media among the youth can have both positive and negative effects. While it provides a platform for expression and connection, it can also lead to cyberbullying, unrealistic comparisons, and a distorted sense of reality, contributing to anxiety and low self-esteem.

(4)    Stigma and Lack of Awareness: Mental health issues are often stigmatized in Kenyan society, making it difficult for young people to seek help. There is a lack of awareness and understanding about mental health, which prevents open conversations and support for those in need.

(5)    Inadequate Mental Health Services: Kenya faces a shortage of mental health professionals and facilities. The available services are often concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural youth with limited access to mental health care.

WE-REACH Efforts and Initiatives for Improvement

The Organization is actively working to raise awareness and provide mental health support such as counselling services, community programs, and education to promote mental wellness. The organization is also doing School-Based Programs where mental health education is incorporated into extra curricula activities. WE-REACH promotes programs focusing on life skills, stress management, and emotional intelligence to help students cope with academic and personal pressures. WE-REACH is embracing Technology to leverage and provide mental health support through tele medicine and online counselling services. The organization is using Platforms like "Mind My Mind" and "Trust Circle" to offer resources and support for young people dealing with mental health issues. The organization is also promoting community-based initiatives which are crucial in providing support and creating safe spaces for young people to discuss their mental health challenges. Peer support groups and community outreach programs help reduce stigma and encourage seeking help.
